Basics That Make A Statement

This post has been inspired by something I read on a favourite fashion blog of mine – Modern Legacy. In her post about subtle statements she mentions that statement pieces don’t always need to be ‘in your face’ and covered in embellishments. Instead sometimes the most basic of details can create a statement; in her words: “dramatic silhouettes, edgy detailing, contrasting textures, bold metal embellishment” can all contribute to that statement.

As I’ve grown up I’ve veered away from those ‘in your face’ pieces and grown to like the more minimal dress code. This outfit is the essence of basics that make a statement. At first glance my outfit could seem quite plain, but then as you look closer you notice the tie detailing on the shirts sleeves and the off the shoulder neckline. Even the jeans which are a basic and must have in everyones wardrobe – men and women alike – this pair of straight legs from Topshop come with a step-hem; a modern nod to a wardrobe classic. Little details like this can make a bigger statement than someone wearing a bright pink, sequin encrusted jumpsuit. It talks in a more effortless, less-is-more way.

My favourite part about this outfit however is this Zara chain bag. After having a love/hate relationship with this bag for months, and many trips into many different Zara stores drooling over it and dragging anyone to see it that would let me; I finally caved and bought it. And oh thank goodness I did! It hasn’t left my shoulder since, my new BFF in the shape of a Chanel quilted classic, framed with edgy chain detailing for that subtle statement we are trying to achieve. This bag can definitely be described as a subtle statement piece, with it’s classic shape, eye catching chain strap and detailing, it speaks quality and versatility. A winner for those that live the minimalist way of dressing/life.
